BIG theatre news dropped this morning that Glee star Amber Riley would be taking to the London stage to play the famous role of Effie White in Dream Girls. Yes, this is exciting, the role originally played by Jennifer Hudson in the 2006 film definitely leaves big shoes to fill – Hudson scored a Oscar for this electric performance, and of course everybody has listened to her rendition of ‘And I Am Telling You’.
It’s no surprise that Amber has been chosen to play the American soul singer Effie White. Her incredible vocals and acting talent were made ever so clear on the hit show Glee – yes Mercedes Jones brought soul and sass to the teen drama, qualities which are similar to that of Effie White herself.
Set in the 1960s and inspired by R&M acts such as The Supremes, Dream Girls tells the story of three female singers, from Chicago, who together are called The Dreams. The musical has some incredible show numbers that will be directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw, who also directed The Book of Mormon, and is being brought to the UK for the first time by Sonia Friedman Productions.
Riley said: “I am so honoured and excited to not only be playing such an iconic role, but also to be working with Sonia Friedman and Casey Nicholaw. Working on the West End is now a dream realised, I just feel like this is going to be something special.”
The original stage production in 1981 scored six Tony Awards, and I predict BIG things for this remake.
